João Miguel Barros nasceu em 1958, em Lisboa.

Advogado de profissão, em Macau e Lisboa, esteve sempre ligado à Fotografia, tendo sido co-diretor da revista cultural SEMA, entre 1979 e 1982. Em 2003 coordenou o projeto do livro de fotografia Prisões – Espaços Habitados, que esteve na origem de várias exposições realizadas em Portugal. 

Publicou o livro de fotografia Between Gaze and Hallucination, em 2017. Para além de fotógrafo premiado, é curador na área da fotografia contemporânea.

Nos últimos anos tem vindo a estudar os principais artistas contemporâneos chineses.

Das suas mais recentes exposições individuais, destaca-se: "Photo-metragens", Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisboa, (2018).

He is a Lawyer by profession, in Macau and Lisbon.

He was co-director of the SEMA culture and visual arts magazine published in Lisbon between 1979 and1982.

Recent individual exhibitions: “Creative Macau”, Macau (2017), “Museu Coleção Berardo”, Lisbon, (2018), “Macau Contemporary Art Center”, Macau (2019), Albergue SCM (2019) and “Fundação Rui Cunha”, Macau (2020).

He has participated in several group exhibitions.

He published three photobooks: “Between Gaze and Hallucination” (self-published) in 2017, “Photo-Scripts – 14 short stories” (published by Museu Berardo) in 2018 and “Photo- Scripts” (published by The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau S.A.R. Government).

In the beginning of 2020, he started publishing the magazine Zine.Photo (www.zine.photo) including his own documentary projects.

João Miguel Barros is also a freelance curator in contemporary photography, having promoted photography exhibitions of Chinese Artists in Portugal and is developing several other projects in this area.
